Is Invisalign Right For You?
One of the most common questions we get at our office is from patients thinking about getting braces. They are confused as to whether they need traditional braces using wires and metal brackets or can they have Invisalign Wireless Braces. They are confused by information they have gleaned from family and friends and very often by misleading information on the web.
Who Can Have Invisalign?
For the most part there are very few exceptions when it comes to using Invisalign. Recently Invisalign started a new process called Invisalign Teen. So, now except for the very young, Invisalign can be used for teenagers on up to adults of almost any age. Once children reach maturity or even before, Invisalign is an option. When deciding to use Invisalign for teens it is more a responsibility issue than mechanical. Will children wear the aligners (trays) as prescribed? Will they store them properly and not lose them? Will they follow the rules of wearing the aligners around 21 – 23 hours per day?
Are There Any Dental Conditions That Invisalign Cannot Treat?
This is a difficult question to answer since every mouth is different and every patient unique. The reality is that, for the most part, Invisalign can be used wherever traditional braces can be used with very few exceptions. One of these exceptions occurs when patients require orthognathic surgery in order to alter a true skeletal problem. Another possibility occurs for patients that just don’t have the dexterity to handle the insertion and removal of the aligners (trays). This is extremely rare since the aligners are very similar to tooth whitening trays and are easy to insert and remove.
The first step in the process is a diagnostic visit. During that visit we will take detailed impressions of your upper and lower jaw. We will then take a series of pictures and a panoramic x-ray. All of this data is then sent to Invisalign for the creation of, what they call, a ClinCheck. This video takes a few weeks to be created but once done shows, step by step, week by week, what your treatment will look like at every step. Once I approve the treatment, Invisalign starts to create your aligners. The full set is completed at one time regardless of how many aligners will be necessary to complete your treatment.
The actual treatment is also extremely simple. When you start your Invisalign you will be given three sets of aligners (trays). You will wear the first set for two weeks allowing your teeth to move just .2mm during those two weeks. You will change the aligners after two weeks and then again two weeks later. Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks only. We will tell you, in the beginning, approximately how many sets of aligners will be necessary to accomplish our mutual goals.
Other than a handful of exceptions, Invisalign can be used in pretty much every situation. The only way to find out is to give us a call and schedule a Complimentary Consultation. Call us today at 516 741-1230.
